Case management is the new term for what was previously called transactional content management (TCM) by enterprise content management (ECM) vendors. This change of name is important because case management is also the term used to describe the way in which employees handle their workloads in particular industries, for example in the public sector where social workers handle cases. However, despite the confusion that will invariably arise from the name, case management in terms of ECM is a powerful commodity as it incorporates all of the components required to create content-centric processes that bring together content and transactional data. Organizations that have a requirement to process large volumes of content alongside transactional data should consider case management, and vendors that offer case management should look to create solutions comprising functionality and pre-built processes for specific vertical markets.
