The notebook category has grown 44% in the last year (1H05 v 1H04), making it one of the fastest-growing technology segments in the U.S. retail market. In 2Q05, notebook unit sales surpassed desktop sales for the first time in the U.S. retail market. In a market showing such sales strength, one would expect the top consumer notebook manufacturers to be comfortably enjoying their sales growth. However, today’s U.S. notebook retail distribution channel is a battlefield–even more than it was one year ago.
