Scale-out storage-also called horizontal scaling-differs from scale-up storage, but vendor messaging can often leave users confused about the differences between the two. Each scaling methodology has its own place in managing today’s complex storage environments and needs to be understood. Sometimes, a combination of the two can yield optimal benefits as they are not necessarily mutually exclusive.
