Researchers: Faster adoption of WPA protocol needed to counter threat of huge virus attacks on WiFi networks

Researchers at Indiana University have raised an alarm regarding the potential vulnerability of WiFi networks to malware attacks that theoretically could be amplified into massive incidents as unsecured wireless routers in cities are infected and directed to spread viruses to other devices within range.

The researchers said that, in the absence of software to detect or prevent WiFi virus attacks, faster adoption of the WiFi Protected Access (WPA) encryption protocol is needed to at least contain this emerging threat if it materializes.
